since this file is stored on a exnternal Firewire drive you could also select "ignore ownership on this volume" in the get info dialoge for this volume. This isn't ideal for those who are security minded but it is another solution to your problem

This is where user groups and the umask are supposed to be used, but I'm not sure that the Finder will actually obey these.
