I would really like to know which Apple Store site you are seeing this on. I checked several and could not find it.

BTW, the part number is F5U230.

A Google search on "belkin f5u230" turns up only UK and AU and NZ domained links.

Install the Belkin IrDA F5U230 USB Adapter

I couldn't find this adapter on the Apple Store site either. However, I found a bunch of IR adapters at <http://www.irgear.com>. I found a review for a Sony Clié at <http://www.pcpro.co.uk/reviews/reviews_story.php?id=38856> that describes a MacOS X user who uses and IrDA adapter to synch his Clié. I haven't tried this yet but have an adapter on order. Will report back what I find out.

In a similar vein, has anyone tried using the Ericsson Client with a USB IRda?

Apparently it's discontinued

The F5U230 is not listed on the Belkin site, and has been removed from several other sites. My guess is that it is a discontinued product.

Now I feel really silly! It IS offered on the Belkin site, but it appears to be only sold outside the US. It appears to be a new product, not discontinued. A lot of times, electronics manufacturers will offer their toys outside the US first, to work out the bugs and to make sure that they can pass the US regulatory requirements on electronic devices.

So- I guess that the Smartbeam may eventually show up in the US. We'll just have to wait and see...

Bah. It's offered on the Italian Apple Store, but they will only take orders from addresses in Italy.

I ordered a generic USB-IrDA adapter, but System Profiler doesn't even pick it up. Nothing shows up on either USB bus in the "Devices and Volumes" pane. Freakin' annoying. Anyhoo, good thing it was only $20. I dunno if I'd want to pay $60 for an IrDA-USB adapter if, for that price, I can just upgrade my phone to a Bluetooth-capable one.

Maybe I'll get motivated to hack a USB driver...

Well, I just had better luck Froogling for 'belkin smartbeam'. I'm still somewhat philosophically opposed to paying more than $20 for something that's essentially a simple translator. Maybe Panther will make this all moot. One can only hope...

Does it work for any infrared thing? Or just the belkin one?
