Wow! I'm glad to see so many others were having this problem and it wasn't just me (Note to RobG: Shoulda put this up the first time I submitted it! ;-) ). For a while, I seriously thought the new AAC files from iTunes and/or iTunes 4 itself were just awful. I found myself increasing the volume of all my songs using the iTunes volume adjustment option, but it wasn't helping. Turns out my balance was skewed way to the right. Bad Apple! Bad! :-)

Anyway, here's the response I received from Apple after filing the bug report mentioned in the hint:
