Anyone else have Windows Sharing problems?
Authored by: iRideSnow on Jul 10, '03 08:36:54PM

I too have Fixed/DHCP settings for home/work. I have two "Locations": Home and DHCP. At home I use Airport exclusively. In the "Network Port Configurations" option of the Network Preferences Pane for my Home location, I have Airport at the top of the list, and it is the only one checked (active). For the DHCP location, I use both Airport and Ethernet depending on where I am (work uses ethernet, coffee shop uses airport). So for DHCP, I have both Airport and Ethernet active, but Airport is first in the list, so it takes precedence. You can drag the various port configurations around in the list to make them take whatever precedence you want.

The above configuration works very well and I don't get any lag when switching locations, except the time it takes to connect to a particular wireless network, but that is only like 3-4 seconds, if that.

The only problem I have is that I interact with various Windows networks, so I have "Windows Sharing" enabled in my Sharing Preferences Pane. What happens is that when I switch from one location to another, OS X *sometimes* turns Windows Sharing off. I filed this as a bug quite some time ago, and got some feedback from Apple on it, but it still happens in 10.2.6.

Oh, one other problem I have is that if I leave a Windows disk mounted when I change locations (e.g. from work to home or whatever), it completely mucks up my system and I end up having to reboot OS X. Very frustrating when I forget to disconnect a mounted disk before leaving my current location.

There were some excellent hints on automating the unmounting of disks in the forum a while back. A search in the forums may give you some useful info.
