arrgh. this is one of the most annoying UI violations that Windows makes. Copy/Paste should be used to copy/paste the the *text* of filenames. i've used this countless times when working with a large number of files [being able to copy the list of filenames into a text file is way cool].

this is lame.

Select all the files in a directory, then copy the selection. Open TextEdit, hit paste - bingo, a list of filenames. Paste into another location in the Finder, though, and you copy the actual files.

Seems like a nice compromise to me - having it work both ways.

Like Robg said, if you paste into a text editor, you get the filenames only. Try it, it works!
