Prevent Safari from permanently retaining site icons

Well, favicon files are only about 1k in size, usually less. Someone would have to visit thousands of unique websites day after day to accumulate "megabytes" worth of them.

Actually, after having tried this, I found the bookmarks and history menu's to be a lot more responsive. Thumbs up from me (and it was indeed only 1.6Mb I had to throw away)

After I did the permissions changes and relaunched Safari, it indeed stopped the icons, but I still get the same annoying delays getting the Bookmarks menu to come down. (My History menu never suffered delays at any time, unlike the other fellow said.)

Now what? The Bookmarks menu perhaps is the most frequently used menu, yet it's the only one with these interminable delays. Aaarrrgghh! There *has* to be a solution ... H-E-L-P !!!!

Further information about the Safari Bookmarks menu delay:

The delay does not occur every single trip to the Bookmarks menu. E.g., if one goes to the menu and experiences the delay, then dismisses the menu, then immediately returns to the menu, the delay does not occur during the second menu access.

Hope this provides a clue to someone to solve this Safari productivity-killer!

Memo: To repeat, changing the permissions to the icon folder to Read Only did not for me stop the delay involving the Bookmarks menu. Also, the History menu never at any time suffered the delay for me.

dude, favicons are, like *counts* 1....2....3...... less than 1K large! do you really visit 2000+ sites regularly to acquire "MB's" of favicons? I don't think this should be an issue... you can probably just set up an applescript to flush them once in a while if it really matters that much

Guess you would not expect this then:
Command I on ~/Library/Safari/Icons:
=>
Kind: Folder
Size: 2,4 MB

(all this with 1k favicon files...)
And my safari has gotten very very slow...
