Mounting iPods after waking from sleep

i have to say, as a new ipod owner, this sleep issue is probably my most glaring problem with it. apple has converted me to a person who never shuts down his machine - sleep is clearly a better solution. however, when the ipod is in the dock and connected to the firewire port and you put your machine to sleep, it stops charging. worse, it seems to drain the battery! when my machine wakes from sleep, what was previously a full battery begins to charge again.

this just seems ridiculous to me. why offer a dock if you really need to undock the ipod before you put your machine to sleep each time? i find this very irritating and i'm surprised that the ipod doesn't have a better way of dealing with it now that it's in its 3rd generation.. wake up, apple - literally!

off-topic: 2 other gripes about the ipod. 1. when listening to music that is live and divided into tracks, you get a silent pause between each track. can't the ipod crossfade to eliminate this gap? doesn't seem that tough.. 2. i like to shuffle my playlists. sometimes i don't. why isn't there an easy key-combo to turn the shuffle on and off rather than digging through the menus to get to settings every time? how about holding down the backwards and forwards buttons at the same time or something? grr.
