one year later...
To turn on verbose boot logging all the time:
In the terminal, type
sudo nvram boot-args="-v"
If you want to reverse the change, the command is
sudo nvram boot-args="" (THATS QUOTE QUOTE)
you can find out the status of your boot args with
sudo nvram boot-args
