Use uncompressed TIFs to speed iPhoto
It's a good idea never to have file compression on when working with TIFFs (especially those you plan on having printed or archiving.) As a general rule of compression, it's better to work with uncompressed TIFF files becuase image quality (a.k.a. data) is lost each time you save a compressed image to an uncompressed image and back again (this is especially true when taking your digital images to a professional printer.)

LZW compression is a lossless algorithm. JPEG compression is lossy, as everyone knows. The main reason not to use LZW compression on TIFFs is that imagesetters don't like it.

Tiff compression is generally lossless (LZW, ZIP or CCIT), contrary to JPEG ones. Some TIFFs use JPEG-like compression but I didn't see one yet. So, it's better to check the TIFF files with GraphicConverter, e.g., to test their compression scheme.

I think competent professional printers are able to handle the lossless file compression used on many tiffs...Photoshop certainly does (lzw & zip). And who doesn't have Photoshop who has an imagesetter (no matter how flaky.)

I love LZW but apparently some RIPs still have problems, or so I've been told. Personally I think jobs are just bounced back by over zealous preflighters. |
