An AppleScript to create a Virex7 GUI

There is a file in a special folder for OS 10.2 users on the Virex install CD. After applying it Jaguar no longer crashes when running Virex 7.

Could you tell us where the file is and what it's called?

(and btw, anonymous, you're NOT the only one!)

If anyone wants and AppleScript Studio version of a Virex GUI, let me know (if you can't send email, just post). It is a little sluggish on startup, but after that it will allow you to prett much use any of Virex's features. It also allows scheduled scans (cron jobs) and update virus definitions on a regular basis (cron job as well). I have no problems sending the source code as well if you want it.

I also have Virex 7.0 and find it works well.

Have you got the HotFix 1 patch from mcafee which fixes the stalling and or crashing of Virex under X.2.?.

I have the patch if needed it is only a small file size and easly sent via email.

I also have the CD but cannot find anything on it like what was mentioned.

Not needed by me. We asked, and they didn't offer us anything. For us it is easier to switch to Norton than to keep waiting on McAfee. I only did the different GUI because I was amazed at how long it took them to add basic features that virus software has to have (auto updates and scheduled scans). I should say this was for 450 Macs.

If anyone should want the Virex 7.0 Hotfix 1 patch. I have it and will send it to anyone who needs it.

Mcafee want say anything about it because it is only available to Prime Support Customers of which I am one.

Let me know if anyone would like it.

The file size is less than 1 meg.

Waitsec... they have an easily repeatable crashing bug for their GUI in OS 10.2 and they won't give out the fix to anybody except their Prime Support Customers? That's just stupid!

Oh, and I still don't see the need to install virus protection software (unless you know you have a virus already). Viruses for the mac are so uncommon (I've never seen one and I've been using macs all my life - I'm 18, BTW) that virus protection software tends to just cause more problems than it fixes (i.e. in scanning stuff for viruses, sucking up CPU time, etc)

You're right, it is stupid! And on their website it's almost impossible to find the support area. And on top of that in order to download any updates you need some kind of a "grant number", which I don't have because I got Virex with MacLinkPlus.

Oh, and it crashes for me quite nicely on the Unix command line also.

The handy thing about anti-virus software on the Mac is that Virex at least will find Windoze viruses, which is nice so you don't pass them on (which I think someone else mentioned). The version of Norton I have doesn't do this.
