If you have access to a Windows machine, you might try copying the "Tahoma" TrueType font (TAHOMA.TTF) onto your OS X system, and using that. Tahoma and Verdana were both developed by Microsoft, were heavily optimized and hinted for excellent onscreen display, and have almost identical outlines. However, Tahoma is tracked a lot tighter than Verdana, so letters fit closer together and text takes up less space.

I personally feel that Verdana's wide-open letter spacing looks better than Tahoma's on web pages, but if Verdana's character shape and hinting are important to you, then you may like Tahoma too.
