A fix for Finder crashing when selecting Applications folder
I recently had exactly the same problem - the finder would crash
on any attempt to access the Applications folder.
To find the cause proceed as follows: 1) Quit the finder 2) Execute the finder from a Terminal by entering: /System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/MacOS/ Finder(on one line) 3) Attempt to open Applications. Finder will crash again, of course, but this time the STDOUT and STDERR will be displayed on the terminal, and you may see something like: 2003-05-01 08:38:24.773 Finder[512] CFLog (0): CFPropertyListCreateFromXMLData(): plist parse failed; the data is not proper UTF-8. The file name for this data could be: Contents/Info.plist -- file://(application causing problem) The parser will retry as in 10.1, but the problem should be corrected in the plist. Segmentation faultThis shows that the problem was caused by a corrupted Info.plist. Moving the offending application out of Applications solved the problem (rather, moved it to another folder. I still need to reinstall the application). A crash log may appear in ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/ Finder.crash.log, but it does not pinpoint the cause.
Applications folder just doesn't open
I'm hoping to solve a similar problem for a friend with a new (3 weeks) iBook: every time she opens the application folder, it almost instantly closes (Finder doesn't crash).
