Drag icons from unfocused windows without switching focus
Authored by: seven5 on Apr 23, '03 10:47:47AM

i may be confused, but i don't press anything to do this. I can
grab a file or icon from an unfocused finder window without
pressing anything.....

The point is not to loose focus. Loosing focus seems to depend
on the application being used or what kind of icons you drag. I
discovered this after getting frustrated many times by dragging
icons in the titlebar to save/open sheets (I usually have the
window where I want to save something already open, so unless
you are in column view the only way to reach its icon is going to
its titlebar) and giving the Finder the focus without wanting it.

Try dragging the icon in the title bar from an unfocused window
with no command+shift and you'll loose focus.

You can experiment with other apps. Try dragging icons in the
titlebar from unfocused photoshop documents, web pages in
Internet Explorer, etc. It will, obviously, do the same, but your
current focus will stay if you press command+click, but it will
change if you do not press those keys.

IMO, Apple could have left the unchanged-focus feature in all
apps without key combos if the user dragged something, and
change focus if s/he clicks without dragging, but al least we
have the feature with the keys.

It seems that nobody has considered the effects of spring-loaded folders and windows, configureable under Finder preferences. When I drag a folder from a focused window to a non-focused window, it remains un-focused if I'm fairly quick with the action; if I lollygag for a moment, the focus will follow, dependent on how fast the action is set up under Finder preferences.

Yes, that is true.

mmm... maybe the title of the hint should have read "drag icons
from unfocused applications...".

As a side effect though, you get to see the spring loaded folder
scale in low motion due to the shift key ^_^ (I had only see
that in Dock scaling and when selecting a user in the login
window). Really useful :-D
