Setting custom icon for the Utilities folder in the Dock
Authored by: osxpounder on Apr 21, '03 12:27:46PM

Rob, and others:

I've tried everything I could think of, including logging in as root [in Terminal, as well as using NetInfo Manager to "authenticate"]. Nothing lets me change the icons for those actual folders, /Applications and /Applications/Utilities ....

So I created a folder in my Documents folder called "aliases often used", and made aliases for these special, fussy folders. The aliases will take custom icons, and will still show the contextual menu if you put them in the Dock and hold down the mouse on one of them. I haven't seen what'll happen if I log out and back in again, though.

PS: If you ever use NetInfo Manager to "Enable root user", remember to go back and "Disable root user" when you're finished with the task at hand; I'm told you should not leave your root user enabled, for security reasons.
