If you do not have TinkerTool, just pop over to the terminal and enter the command

osascript -e 'tell application "Finder" to quit'

If you do have tinkertool of course, you could always just uncheck 'use the desktop', which will leave the finder running but prevent clicks on the desktop from ever switching out of your curent app. You can still access the contents of your desktop at ~/Desktop

For myself, I find it quicker to simply switch to the Finder and hit Cmd-Q. Most of the time, I do use the Desktop.
