Use iTunes3 to extract hidden tracks from songs
Does this re-encode the already-mp3'd data, or does it just split the track in two?
I know that Audion has a little mp3 editor that is for the express purpose of this sort of abuse, which does not re-encode the data - it just cuts it up at the level of the individual chunks of encoded sound; I've used it in the past to chop blank space out of 'hidden tracks'.

It re-encodes. However, if you re-encode at the same bit rate you're not losing anything -- or at least, not much more -- because any filterable audio has already been filtered at that bit rate. It's like re-straining the spaghetti in the collander. You don't get less spaghetti and you don't strain more water. |
