Use iTunes3 to extract hidden tracks from songs

If you do so, does the qualitiy of the mp3 stay the same or is it reduced because of decoding/re-encoding?

Good question. After examining the original file and a smaller one that I created from it, all seems OK -- no loss. The original was a 1:59/2.2 MB (Finder says 2391486 bytes) at 160 kbps. The shorter one is 1:00/1.2 MB (1203264 in Finder) at 160 kbps.

That doesn't make sense, though...does it? :\

Oh yes, there will be degradtion. The severity of it, however, may be a matter of taste. I would use this method on spoken word audio, for example.

I dunnoabout that, which is one of the reasons i split the mp3 file , rather than re-encoding. Although, in fairness, i have no idea if it is de/recoding, but hey, who needs audio degredation? :)

a bit of overkill, but hey, works great

MP3 is similar to JPG formats, which are lossy. Hence why you will not convert all your mp3s to mp4 when the time comes to load up your ipod with 100000 songs. :)
