Rather than connecting to your computer by using localhost (which requires that File Sharing be enabled), you can also use the "Go to Folder..." command in the Finder. This command can be found under the "Go" menu, or you can just press Apple-shift-~. This presents you with a text input area labeled "Go to the folder:". If you enter "/private/etc" you will be taken to the /etc directory. Likewise for any of the other hidden directories found in /private.
