Actually, "Show Item Info" on the desktop can be pretty useful in a couple cases.

  1. If, like me, you monitor your disk usage very closely, it can come very much in handy, as it tells you both the maximum capacity of your hard disk (2 gigs smaller than I thought) and the amount free.
  2. If you want to be able to tell the size of a picture at a glance. Oddly, this doesn't appear sometimes - usually with pictures I've downloaded from the internet, but it always appears with pictures saved from Photoshop. And occasionally with pics exported from Preview.

It's not as useless as it seems, really.

Sorry, I could have been clearer in my post. What I meant is that the appearance of the "Show More Info" option isn't very clear on the desktop, because the extra info text is shown in the same point size and colour as the name of each disk/file/folder. The same information within a window is smaller and in blue, clearly differentiated.

It'd be nice if the desktop's extra info was smaller, and perhaps partly transparent -- for me, it's just too cluttered right now.
