Explaining the Finder's view options and toolbar visibility

If you have the hack for a "Quit" menu item in the Finder installed, then when you use that to close the finder, these control files get written.

As long as the Finder exits cleanly, then the states will be saved. if a crash or a force quit terminates it, then you will lose these changes.

TinkerTool (www.bresink.de) performs this hack nicely. No doubt there are other ways.
