My guess is that, at the moment, OS X mounts volumes in fstab by looking at the actual volume label (the name of the volume), so if you rename a fstab mounted volume to something else, it won't mount anymore. This hint works around that by binding to a deeper system-level name.

At least that's what I think this hint is referring to. I stopped using fstab to mount volumes when I started getting mount errors on startup.
