A tale of a G4 Cube, a bad ethernet port, and an AirPort card

Interesting.

I have a cube and once I put OS X on it, the ethernet port stopped working for TPC/IP. (I have loads of memory on it and did a completely clean install.).

I happened to have an older Apple wireless card that was not being used, so I dropped it in. The card works just fine and I am running 10.2.4 and the most recent Airport software. The ethernet issue is really weird, though. Anyone have any suggestions?

Maybe it's the order in your network configuration.
Go to the prefpane "Network". Use the second pulldown menu to open
"Network configurations". Drag the entry "Ethernet (buildin)" to the top.
Activate.

Thanks for the suggestion. Acutally, the ethernet port would not work before I installed the airport card. I even set up a location with just the ethernet interface (no modem selected) still no luch. The firmware is up to date, too.

When I first got my Cube I had lots of problems with the Ethernet. Sometimes I would only receive and not send data. If I tried to copy a file from my Cube to a network drive it would just lock up. I think after I went to 10.2 it started working right. I have never had problems with my Airport card though. I do run a WISP, so I have lots of power just above my home.

Is your ethernet port connected to a hub or switch. My iBook 600 won't work on my home network which is 10Mb hub based, but works fine on my work one (100Mb switched). I've not bothered with a solution since I've got WiFi at home anyway, and cables are too messy.
