I might need to clarify this. It was the background disk copy helper application that reported the missing "Temporary Items" folder, thus aborting the creation of the disk image. Mounting an image was never a problem.
Some more tests on external firewire disks showed that this error will occur unless the target disk (where the disk image is created) has a Temporary Items folder.
The main partition (where the OS lives) has user specific Temporary Items folders in /tmp/<pid>, which of course are not visible within the Finder.
