I just had a nice implosion yesterday...

All I know is I fired up iTunes, it slowly came to life and then the screen went blank as the cursor blinked a little - and that was that.

Rebooting was of no help, either warm or cold. Same symptom. Cursor would show up in the top left, blink a little and that was that. LoginWindow or WindowServer was borked - bad. To diagnose a system that essentially didn't tell me anything, I used ssh from the Sun Ultra60 on my network to get into the box and look at /var/log/system.log. Well, I knew what the problem was - but not how to fix it.

I had to do a reinstall of OS X as the quickest means of recovery. No biggie, I've done it before - archive and install is your friend. Except this time, I forgot to "customize" the install and as it was proceeding to go through all the languages, I quit the installer, figuring I'll reboot and try again. Except when the installer started up again, archive and install was greyed out! I thought, briefly, about installing on the second drive, but figured, screw it... I went and did it. The system came back and my heart sank as I noticed my user directory was EMPTY. A few seconds later, "Previous Systems" popped up in the Finder, and all was good again. A bunch of tweaking and reinstalling a few things and life was all well-and-good once more. Phhhheeeewwww...
