Airport Extreme

Buuu huuu huuu...

...there seems to be no way to upgrade an existing PowerBook from Airport to Airport Extreme. They use MiniPCI-Cards instead of the old PCMCIA card format. And they didn't increase the security options. And you only get the full speed if there are only Airport Extreme clients in the network - the speed drops back to 11MBit when older clients are present for compatibility reasons.

I really don't understand the decision to abandon the installed Airport user base - it's no problem to pack the 54MBit punch in a PCMCIA card (Cisco does it with 802.11a) and the bus is fast enough. Standard is a PCMCIA card for clients and a MiniPCI card for the basestation...

Let's hope some other manufacturer jumps in and provides the cards and the drivers - after all the new basestation is quite a bargain.

Yeah, I was a little ticked that my iBook that does not have AirPort installed and is less than two months old cannot use AirPort Extreme. (I was also a little ticked that I couldn't even say 'damn' on an Apple Discussions board.)

gimme a break..

as if quartz extreme wasn't bad enough.

and yes i was irked by the un-upgradablility of the airport slot in my newly purchased 1 ghz powerbook. (oh and having a new powerbook released two weeks after receiving my brand spanking new 1 ghz powerbook pisses me off already).

well - it seems there is Airport Extreme for older PowerBooks...

In the German Apple-Onlinestore, http://store.apple.com/Apple/WebObjects/germanstore/ , in the Airport section (called "Drahtlos" in german, just where the "Wireless" is in the US Apple-Onlinestore) somewhere near the bottom of the page is a new item:

a Belkin 54g 802.11g PCMCIA cardbus card für EUR 99,- (US$103,-)

Looks nice!
