Airport Extreme
is NOT compatible with 802.11a, it IS compatible with 802.11b (i.e. Airport or Wi-Fi). The 802.11a standard specifies a different transmission frequency (5 Ghz) and different modulation schemes. Both 802.11b and 802.11g operate on the same frequency (2.4 Ghz) and that is why they can be compatible.
