Cant get this to work
Authored by: offsky on May 29, '01 01:20:34PM

I cant seem to get sendmail to work on my machine. I set it up like it says in the link. The only difference is that my machine does not have a name, so in the hostname part I put my IP number. Now when I run the tail command in one window and try to use sendmail I get this error:

May 29 10:04:10 localhost sendmail[349]: My unqualified host name (localhost) unknown; sleeping for retry
May 29 10:05:10 localhost sendmail[349]: unable to qualify my own domain name (localhost) -- using short name
May 29 10:05:10 localhost sendmail[349]: NOQUEUE: SYSERR(www): /etc/mail/sendmail.cf: line 81: fileclass: cannot open /etc/mail/local-host-names: Group writable directory
May 29 10:05:10 localhost sendmail[349]: gethostbyaddr(10.21.1.31) failed: 1

Any ideas?

Just do this!

I have encountered this problem with every default of OS X I have ever had. You can simply make the root and /etc/mail directories not group-writable by typing the following:
chmod g-w /
chmod g-w /etc/mail
Ta-da, its that easy
