You do not need anything to have iChat open when opening a dial-up connection. Leave iChat connected, simply disconnect the modem. iChat will open itself when it sees that the connection is available next time.

In my experience (full time LAN connection), iChat will randomly lose its connection and not attempt to reconnect. It also seems to think it is connected when it actually isn't. I am not a heavy iChat user, so I haven't pushed this, but my kids all prefer AIM because it stays connected.

Okay but that wasn't really the point of this hint. It was claimed that by having iChatAgent in your Login Items it would automagically make you available to others, "It is possible to sign on automatically to iChat without opening iChat itself". That was the point of the previous hint using AppleScript and now this hint.
