Limited Effectiveness
Authored by: Frederico on Dec 23, '02 07:05:00PM

The problem with this method is that, as of the last I could confirm, the 'Rebuild Desktop' option with in OS X Classic System Preferences only rebuilds the DT DB/DF files for the volume containing the Classic System Folder.

So, if you have multiple volumes, you may still have a Desktop DB/DF file as the source of many Classic issues; such issues are very often found when you attempt to double-click a file icon to launch its parent app; crashes when accessing Open, Save, Save As... and Recent Items; also when using the old-style Navigation Services from within many Classic-only apps (GoLive 4-5, etc). In fact, this is one of the chief flakey reasons many people can't get Quark to run reliably under Classic.

The only way to deal with it effectively is to boot from an OS 9 (NOTE: do not use an 8.6 or earlier disk to do this!! It will build an incompatible DT DB/DF!!!!!) volume (or CD) and do a *PROPER* rebuild command (NOTE: Just holding down the Command-Option keys is *NOT CORRECT*; see: http://www.sciencequest.org). In fact, it is much better to *DELETE* and rebuild the DTs from scratch, using numerous methods, amongst them Trash*Desktop 1.3.

If you leave a mix of old and new DTs, some built from older versions of the Legacy OS, and some built under OS X, you're begging for trouble.

I have no idea yet how this will affect multi-partition users once we are screwed into OS X-only booting machines next year. Currently, deleting DTs under X and allowing Classic to rebuild them on next launch is unstable, at best.
