VueScan drivers
I'm thrilled to hear that there are OS X native drivers for the 650u scanners finally! My hopes were elevated (and later let down) when I saw that Canon came out with OS X native drivers for the 676u. The plugin specifically looked for just two or three model types (kernel log reported) before failing. They are so similar that the driver would probably work "good enough" just by changing the USB product id it searchs for..
Anyways, what I wanted to mention is the software that I have been using in the meantime: VueScan. It's scanning software from Hamrick that recognizes a wide range of USB, SCSI, and Firewire scanners, including the 650U series (and my 656U). There is a pretty decent list of supported scanners available.
I've found that it's quality and usuability are not quite as good as Canon's stuff for OS 9, but they are "good enough" for 98% of the owners out there. The only deficiencies I've found are near the scanning extremes such as fairly small <2" high-res scans and large image full-bed high-res scans. It has other nice features, though, such as raw data output and multi-pass hypersample scanning. A decent deal for $40.
