This could be considered a loss of functionality. OS 9 Aliases worked across machines, meaning if you took an alias of an app to another machine it would attempt to connect to your machine over the network to run your copy of the app...

There is no loss of functionality, aliases still do this in OS X, I can click on an alias on one machine, and it will look for it on my other machine across the network. The only quibble I have with OS X is that symlinks and aliases aren't treated the same.
