ssh can't always rescue you

Unfortunately, it seems that sometimes whatever is wedging the display also prevents ssh from logging in. I have only successfully used the ssh trick once since OS X beta.

I often find my wedged machine will respond to pings, but trying to open an ssh session just hangs (and times out).

IWBNI Apple provided some keyboard escape to get you to a shell prompt (using the raw screen that verbose booting uses) for situations like this.
