Satan Baby Fixes The Problem

Here's the solution to the problem I just anonymously posted over at www.iPodding.com. I did forget to include the URL to the HexEditor though. It can be found at http://www.ex-cinder.com/hexeditor.html. Send Raphael some thanks.

There's a simple solution to this. Using a hex editor - I used "HexEditor 1.4" graciously provided as freeware to the OS X hacking community by Raphael Sebbe. If he makes shareware, send him the money, because he's saved us all lot of time and pain due to Apple's "fix" to the Find command.

If you simply use the terminal command and do a 'strings /System/Library/Find/PlugIns/FileSearchPlugin.bundle/Contents/MacOS/FileSearchPlugin" you will find a string called "iPod_Control". This should tip you off to the fact that Apple had a special purpose for a folder called "iPod_Control", and what else could it be, but a "fix" to the Find command that prevents this folder from being searched at all costs. This part of the code effectively sets an access list for folders that are not to be searched.

Anyway, using a hex editor, change the string "iPod_Control" into some gobbledgy-gook string that is unlikely to manifest itself in a file or folder name. You may also want to remove the string completely and see what happens, but this could be a dangerous undertaking and cause more problems than its worth. However, if you find that it works please let me know, as well as any other hacks you are able to manage.

So, change this string to something like "asdf#ghjkl;'" and save the file as FileSearchPlugin and put it back in the folder. Restart the Finder and you are done. Simple, eh?

***Note*** All this assumes you have made a backup copy with a different name for the original FileSearchPlugin and that you are intelligent enough to know not to do surgery on original files. If you have problems with Root access, Sudo commands, 'cp' problems, etc, just post here and I'll walk you through it. I have the original file called "FileSearchPlugin.orginal10.2.2" and the hacked version with the original file's name of "FileSearchPlugin" in the same directory and it works just fine. If you eventually find that something it not working right you can just replace the hacked version with the original one again. You will need to restart the Finder for the hack to take effect. Another good side effect is that the Visibility flag works on the iPod_Control folder too.

Tried this hack, and it works great ! Can now do a search on invisible items on the ipod and got all my mp3 appearing in the results window. After that just copy the one u need on the desktop. The only drawback is that the mp3's are not organised in albums, artist or whatever...

Oh, i'm on 10.3 ....
