Use symbolic links in a Dropbox folder
Authored by: epstewart on Sep 04, '14 09:09:32AM
I find that putting a symbolic link to a non-Dropbox folder into my Dropbox folder by means of using the DropLink application works pretty much as expected. But that symbolic link, when it is right-clicked, puts up a contextual menu that does not contain the items "Share Dropbox Link", "View on Dropbox.com", and "Share This Folder ... ".

It does, however, contain "Move to Dropbox". Selecting "Move to Dropbox" brings up a message asking me if I want to move the original folder, given that it has the same name as the symbolic link, to Dropbox, thereby producing two separate items in the Dropbox folder, the second of which has a slightly altered name.

I can avoid that snag by modifying the name of the symbolic link before using it in that manner, say by adding "symlink" to its name, then selecting "Move to Dropbox" from its contextual menu.

But my question is: why doesn't the symbolic link behave as if it were the actual folder it links to, and thus have all of the same Dropbox-related contextual menu items? That would seem to me to be preferable.

Thanks to anyone who can either answer that or at least tell me how I can put an alias/symbolic link/hard link to an external folder in my Dropbox folder such that "Share Dropbox Link", "View on Dropbox.com", and "Share This Folder ... " appear in its contextual menu.
