In answer to RMo above (sorry, I can't find a way to reply), I wrote up the following on my blog a while ago:

You can add a Debug menu to Reminders, which contains a Refresh option. I've never been sure what it does -- does it simply download new reminders created elsewhere, or do a full sync?

Anyway, take a look. I can't remember if I discovered this tip or not, so if I didn't, thanks to whoever did!
