Do not make the first byte of your new address an "odd" number (i.e., ending in 1,3,5,7,9,B,D or F) otherwise you will have created a multicast address -- multicast addresses can be seen and received by anyone on the network you are connected to.

This wikipedia page shows that there is structure to Ethernet (MAC Addresses)
