Best practices for Dropbox links
I seem to remember that Dropbox used to recommend against setups like these, instead recommending that the original data be kept in Dropbox and links placed elsewhere. However, either I don't remember correctly or they've changed their mind. Their website now lists this as a possibility, in addition to recommending similar methods on other operating systems and GUI tools for those less comfortable with the command line: http://www.dropboxwiki.com/Sync_Other_Folders EDIT: Selective Sync, as mentioned in hint, is also a good option. I've been using it since it was in testing, and it works nicely when you really only need (or don't) certain folders from your Dropbox on a certain device. Edited on May 31, '13 08:22:55AM by RMo

The problem that the hint is trying to solve explicitly states that the only copy of the photos must remain on the external drive while the Dropbox folder must remain in the internal SSD drive. The solution you quote, "keeping the data in Dropbox and placing links elsewhere" is for a related but different problem: getting Dropbox to sync files that need to be in a directory outside of the Dropbox folder. But that solution will not work for the problem at hand because the actual photo files would reside in the SSD, not in the external drive.

I didn't propose that as a solution to this problem. I was merely stating what had historically been the recommended scenario (but is apparently no longer necessary). |
