You have always (or for a long time, anyhow) been able to choose the number of days shown in week view by hitting command-option-[number], where [number] is 2-7. No hacks required.

Curiously, it only works if you're not already in week-format view. Try switching to month view and then hitting cmd-opt-4 (or something)

alt+command+[1-7] works on 10.6's iCal, but only showing 7 days is not the same as this hint.
