Use keyboard shortcuts to skip and pause Flash videos
The problem is not this does or does not work on the mac, it's focus. The video has to be the focus on the webpage for most keyboard shortcuts to work. Spacebar works on the mac, as do the arrow keys. In fact, youtube has a whole tab-controlled system to move around the controls hands-free in a video - just google 'youtube keyboard controls' for things like the 1-9 number keys insta-jumping to the 10%-90% point in the video. Right. Focus is the "key" here. BTW idontwanttoregis, the Kirk tip is not "so wrong" (those shortcuts works on a Flash video on a Mac), it is just a bit "incomplete".

No, it's not incomplete, it's wrong. He categorically states "These only work with Flash videos; if you load HTML5 videos on YouTube, these shortcuts don't work. It's worth noting that some websites mention that you can use arrow keys and the spacebar to perform the above actions, but these don't work on Macs.". So, the tip summary needs to be updated. just drop those two lines, and replace them with "Ensure the movie has focus by clicking."

Click or not, it doesn't work for me with HTML5 videos. So what could be different between my Safari and your browser? ---

Even though it doesn't work for you, it is documented in several several places. Stating the spacebar and arrow keys don't work on youtube on mac is flat out wrong. Although one could be less acetic in tone when pointing it out, this hint, as written, is wrong. I even switched to the HTML5 viewer - same expected behaviour - click on video, it pauses. Now, spacebar and arrow keys work. Google acknowledges the HTML5 player has issues in full screen - space and arrow keys worked, extended control keys ( 1-9 to go to percent, 0 to beginning) do not work. |
