Fix some iChat connection problems
Authored by: Ralph Johns on Jun 19, '12 11:28:49AM

Hi,

iChat has always needed and manual reconnection to re-establish a lost SSL Connection.
Since AIM introduced the option (Or rather it was added to the AIM side of iChat) the SSL servers AIM have had do not seem to maintain the same connection status as the regular AIM servers (i.e Drop outs are more frequent).

One "Fix" is to turn SSL Off.

The other is to Log the Account/Screen Name off the Aim servers Fully (iChat Preferences Untick "Use this Account") then Log back In again.

Variants such as Logging in without SSL and then Logging Out and turning SSL On again can help when a Connection has been Lost due to external factors (you lost your internet Connection) due to the fact the iChat AIM.plist (com.apple.iChat.AIM.plist) will hold info about the Logged in state when it is in fact NOT Logged in.
This "mismatch" of data between you and the AIM servers will get a refusal. The Longer variant we are discussing here will re-write the .plist involved.

If this fails to work delete the said com..apple.ichat.AIM.plist and restart iChat (this will cause the .plist to be rewritten from defaults within the app)
The File is in your Home Folder/Library/Preferences (~/Library/Preferences or Hard Drive name/Users/(your account)/Library/Preferences)

This works in iChat 4 (when SSL on AIM was introduced) through to Messages Beta (At time of writing and I see no reason why it will not be changed in Mountain Lion (Messages 7) )
