Use SSD + HDD for best value
Authored by: jgl24 on May 27, '12 08:40:17AM

Swapped my optical drive in my MBP for a SSD and life is so much better. I can't stand using my wife's iMac anymore even though it's newer.

The key to doing it cost effectively is to use a SSD + HDD. I put my Photos, Music, Documents, and Movies on the HDD then make a symbolic link to them back in my home directory on the SSD so usage is the same. Then the files that get read all the time (Library, OS, Applications, system files) get a huge speed boost.

You can also even move some of iPhoto's heavily used files (like caches and databases) to the SSD and use symbolic links so iPhoto doesn't even know the difference. I could post a guide if anybody wants...

I suppose hybrid drives are basically the same idea but are supposed to figure all this out automatically for you. Anybody have experience with them?
