Perhaps you have never ran into a network with a pre-shared key (PSK). It is not the same as a wireless access point secured by WPA password.

Is this a Lion-only hint? I ask because I am a Snow Leo user and I don't have any Wifi tab in the Advanced tab of my Network prefpane...In Snow Leopard it is not that hard to figure out, it is the AirPort tab. ---
