Please change the title of this post to not promulgate the incorrect use of purge to "fix" leaky programs!!! Enough commenters here have given you clear documentation about what purge and "freeing" inactive memory does; the title is flat wrong.

Does this really do anything useful on a working production system; I doubt it does. Some users subjectively claim it helps, though many of these are simply beguiled by seeing more FREE RAM and thus assume things are better (placebo). No one has clearly objectively benchmarked its benefit.

But hey, maybe a simple terminal command really does more good than the fruits of labour of hundreds of computer scientists working thousands of man hours engineering virtual memory systems that handle memory on modern computers...
