Automatically reclaim memory from leaky programs
Authored by: nschum on Apr 11, '12 01:00:59PM

There is no way to reclaim "leaked" memory other than quitting the app.

"Leaked" memory is memory the application forgot it had and never frees. There is no way of telling from the outside which memory is a leak and which is needed. The hint is wrong about that.

"Inactive" memory is memory the app has released, but the OS is keeping around "just in case" but can throw out if needed. If you want to believe purging this memory helps, fine. But it has nothing to do with bad applications. If anything there's a bug in the OS when inactive memory isn't used.
