iTunes Match recognizes some digital copies of movies
I've seen this reported elsewhere as well and there seems to be a misunderstanding about what "digital copies" that come with physical discs actually are. They aren't some sort of weird file type or record in your user account. They are simply a gift code for a specific title, so they are exactly like any other movie purchase you make in the iTunes store, and will fall under the same iTunes in the cloud rules as any other purchases you make. Even when a separate disc is included that supposedly contains the digital copy, it's actually nothing more than a way to authenticate a download from iTunes or Microsoft's store. Right, but apparently, when you download these digital copies, if they are in your iTunes library, they get matched. (I don't have any digital copies to be able to test.) ---

No, they don't have to currently be in your library and there is no matching. They're not any different than movies you buy directly through iTunes, so they work exactly the same as iTunes in the cloud does for music and TV shows. Any movies you have ever downloaded from iTunes, whether paying with your card or with a free coupon code ("digital copy"), are permanently in your iTunes purchase history, and can thus be streamed to an Apple TV or re-downloaded.

Sorry, but you're wrong. These digital copies are not provided via codes for the iTunes Store; you get a code that you enter on a movie studio's website to download the files. ---

Sorry, and I'm not meaning to argue, but what I said is correct and it's relevant to the hint to correct the misconception that Digital Copies are somehow special files. Yes, the initial code you get is a code to enter through the studio's website. This is done to allow them to track the download, allow you to choose iTunes or Windows Media format, and to expire the code. But then, they either directly give you an iTunes code for you to use yourself, or sometimes auto submit the iTunes code and open iTunes for you. You most certainly do not download Apple DRMed files from a studio's website. I've done this many times over the past few years, where you apparently have never gone through the process. And some Blu Rays that now offer digital copies via Ultraviolet. I've read reports online however, that when folks have called the studio's support line to complain about this, they're often given iTunes codes to download a suitable replacement. And I suspect those will appear in our iTunes Cloud like other purchased videos.

I'm including a screenshot of the process for those who have never seen it. Also, the code in the printed insert in the DVD case is actually the same code you enter into iTunes at the end of the process, however, I'm not sure if it has to be enabled through the studio's site prior to using it in iTunes.

All that said with the caveat that the movie has to be available in the iTunes store and not subject to an HBO streaming blackout - currently all Fox and Universal pictures and some from WB.

Not always. When I bought Forbidden Kingdom on DVD, the digital copy was on the DVD. All I had to do was copy it into iTunes then enter an activation code to unlock the fairplay DRM. I didn't download anything from a web site or from the iTunes store, yet, it shows up as a purchased movie in iCloud. |
