Like to use TextEdit? Hate not having Save as...?

"Duplicate" does NOT work as "Save As". You can't change the encoding, for example, as you can with "Save As".

Besides losing "Save As" you also lose the very nice Find window. What's replaced the SL Find in the Lion version is trash.

To remove the Lion version, select the file and "Get Info". Click on the lock and enter your administrator password. Then add "Administrators" to the "Sharing and Permissions" list and allow the admin user to "Read and Write" and click the lock again. You can then delete the file and copy over the SL version, naming it "TextEdit". Don't forget to go into DU and repair permissions after you've finished.

If you don't delete the file from the Lion drive, TextEdit 10.7 will always be the default app when opening text or RTF files, even if you rename the file and change the "Open with..." to the SL version.

I saved a copy of the Lion version of TextEdit to an external drive.

You haven't even tried it, have you?

You File->Duplicate first, then when you go to File->Save… (note the ellipsis, implying a dialog; as opposed to "Save a Version"), you get to name the file and choose the encoding.

The toolbar find / replace function works very well. How exactly is it "trash"? I mean, if you're doing something demanding, you'll buy something like Textmate, won't you? … Won't you?
