STOP POSTING FINK HINTS AS OSX HINTS
Authored by: perdedor on Oct 09, '02 11:42:07AM

I'm thinking it's something fink related, which is all so often the case when I see these interesting hints here that seem to work for the submitter, and the editor, yet never seem to work on any over a 1/2 dozen machines I have to mess with, because none of them have fink.

Not fink

It is not fink. I have the book on my machine, but I do not have fink installed. And stop shouting.

This is not fink related...

Also, I do NOT have fink installed on the machine I use to test every hint that's published. The only "non-standard" stuff on my machine is the Dev Tools, which I recommend that everyone install anyway.

I don't have the time, unfortunately, to test every hint on two different configurations. But rest assured, almost nothing published in the last nine months or so has been a "fink only" hint (unless it's a hint that directly mentions fink, of course), as it's been about that long since I've used it...

I have no idea what made you think this hint was fink related in any way. Fink doesn't even install anything out of /sw.

Why so anti-fink anyway? It really makes everything a hell of a lot easier if you want to use unix stuff.

Most likely, this book is installed as part of the "BSD SDK" of the developer tools, which is NOT enabled by default (you have to check it). (this is different from the BSD part of the OS, that is checked by default)

Not on my machine

It didn't work for me at first either and then I modified it like this.

file://localhost/usr/share/swat/using_samba/index.html

After adding the 'localhost', it worked.

I was thinking I didn't have it either until I used the finder's Go to Folder... and went to /usr/share/swat/ and there was the using_samba folder.
I have this problem with Mozilla with most of the HTML files used in Jaguar. Unless I change them to be opened by Mozilla and not IE, Mozilla wont open them
So programs like Adobe Illustrator, that use HTML files for the help system wont open either.

OK, I solved the problem on my system...it will only open if I use the name of the hard drive partition, which is "Sunking":
file:///Sunking/usr/share/swat/using_samba/index.html
