10.7: Move Computer to top of the Finder Sidebar

Did not work on 10.7.1

When I do a search in either TextEdit or PList Editor, there are 2 sections with the heading "Computer"

I changed the first and nothing happened. I then changed the second and again nothing happened. I went back into the file using Plist and found that the first shows "Never Visable" and the Second shows "Always Visable"

Which one needs to be changed or do both of them have to be changed?

Fortunately, I did follow your advise and made a backup.....

Please look at Nathanator and Mapmaker's comments. There is absolutely NO need to edit the plist or any other file. To repeat, here are the steps that put your computer at the top of the list.

1. Finder/Preferences/Sidebar: add a checkmark next to the first item listed under Devices, which will be your computer. Close the Preferences.

2. In a Finder window, look at the list of Devices; the first one is your computer.

3. Cmd-Drag that item anywhere in your Favorites.

While you're there, Cmd-Drag other items in your Favorites into the order your prefer.

Again, you do NOT need to edit a plist file. Moderator - could you possibly replace this potentially dangerous hint with a hint titled "Cmd-Drag items in the Finder Sidebar"??

I tried out this method; what I saw is that I could move drives from Devices to Favorites (as mentioned in the hint) but it would not allow movement of the Computer device icon, which seems weird.

For most people, moving the drive icons probably suffices, but that's not the point of the hint.

Ah - I see the point. You're absolutely right. I was testing this on a machine with only partition. It's more obvious on a machine with two or more partitions, where you might want the computer icon in favorites, but not the drive icons.

Apologies for wasting bandwidth!

Tried it before and just again. Your drag via CMD does not work for me. I get the same "cannot move circle with line through it whether I hold the CMD key or not.
