I knew the problem was with a specific file when I could do the update_prebinding on all my directories except for my 9.1 system folder. Rather than isolate the specific file, I moved my syatem folder to another drive. Incidentally, I have since learned tthe benefits of having two 9.1 installs in a MacOS X setup. Have one optimized for X - few extensions, etc. - and another to run classic apps in X. This will greatly speed up classic launching.
