10.7: Improved Dictionary choices

Good tip. It works for some but not all applications though.

Pages refuses to accept the word 'colour', suggesting the Americanised 'color' instead. Delving into its writing tools dialogue for the Dictionary and Thesaurus options, it shows that it's using the British Dictionary yet still quotes the Americanised version as the main option and the British spelling as an alternative.

It does this with all words that have a different spelling in the American lexicon.

I don't want alternative spelling in my writing; it's an uneccessary distraction to my writing, and to my readers should some misspellings slip through.

I've even gone to the extent of removing American English as an option in the Dictionary's System preferences, however Pages just bumbles on following its own tune, Americanising everything.

To those who don't think it's a big deal. Here are the instances of words that I've used in this comment that Pages insists on Americanising: Colour, Dialogue, Alternative and of course, Americanising. OK, so I made up that last word but the Pages' dictionary insists that it is Americanizing.

I believe you just need to set your System Preferences: Language & Text: Language setting to the desired language rules. As a test, I set the top language to British English and Australian English and it insisted that I (mis)spell "color" as "colour." (You need to restart apps for the new setting to take effect.) Also, make sure that in the Text settings tab you set "Spelling:" to "Automatic by Language."

I now done set it back to regler cuzz, ya know, I's speek 'meracun. But it dun't know how spell dem werds neether.
